i spent the day at my mom's house for mother's day and we had so much fun going through some of her old clothes. i was really trying to find some of her old high-waisted jeans, but instead she pulled out this beautiful white mexican style dress that she got in her early 20's. as you already know, i am pretty obsessed with white dresses these days and this one has the most beautiful crocheted lace detail. it is a little see-through and when i asked her what she wore under it, she said, "nothing, it was the 70's in california." all the little stains and frays make me think of my mom wearing it back when she was my age and only makes me love it more. she also gave me one of the most special gifts i have ever received. my grandmother crocheted this amazing afghan for me before she passed and asked my mom to hold on to it for me. she was like a second mother to me since my mom was a single parent so it almost makes me cry typing this. i spent a lot of time at her house growing up and she would teach me so many different crafts. she could really do it all! there is nothing i wouldn't give to have her back for a day of dumpling-making, sewing, and playing a little cribbage.

i also just wanted to say thank you for all the kind and encouraging comments on my casting post last week. i learned so much about carving this round and i totally agree that i am only going to be that much better next time. sometimes you need the practice, but you don't allow yourself the time. i also have some really exciting news that made it pretty impossible to stay upset. i will hopefully have pictures tomorrow if these cloudy skies ever go away.

  11. My gran more or less raised me too since my own mum was out working for us six kids. That's a beautiful dress and an even more beautiful coverlet. :) My mum is thinner and shorter than me, so the only things we can share are bags and make-up!

  15. the dress and afghan are beautiful. i think the best gifts are those that are handmade, or those that have been passed down!

i understand how close you were with your grandmother. i lived with mine, and she is more like a mom to me than anything, but at least you got to enjoy her so much while she was here!
